Bhubaneswar, July 6: Doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, have successfully saved the life of a critically ill premature baby born at just 24 weeks of pregnancy, marking a significant achievement in neonatal care.
The baby, who was born at another hospital, was referred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of IMS and SUM Hospital in a critical condition. At the time of admission, the infant weighed only 630 grams, making the chances of survival extremely challenging due to extreme prematurity.
A multidisciplinary team of neonatologists and nursing staff provided round-the-clock specialised treatment using advanced life-support measures. The baby was initially managed with invasive mechanical ventilation, followed by Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). The infant also received parenteral nutrition and comprehensive neonatal intensive care to support growth and recovery.
With sustained medical attention and close monitoring, the baby’s condition gradually improved. The successful outcome was the result of the coordinated efforts of the doctors, nursing staff and support personnel of the neonatal unit.
