Bhubaneswar, June 09: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions have become favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into parts of Odisha over the next four to five days, offering hope of relief from the prevailing heat and humidity across the state.
According to the Midday Weather Bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, the monsoon has already advanced into the remaining parts of the northeastern states, the entire Sikkim region and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Meteorologists said the weather system is now poised to progress further into Odisha as well as parts of eastern and central India.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places across Odisha till Wednesday morning. An Orange Warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph are likely.
A Yellow Warning has been sounded for several other districts, including Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Dhenkanal, Angul, Nayagarh, Kalahandi and Rayagada, with wind speeds expected to reach 40-50 kmph.
The weather office has predicted an increase in thunderstorm and rainfall activity from June 11 onwards. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Koraput and Malkangiri on June 11, while Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Gajapati may receive heavy showers on June 12.
Meanwhile, the IMD also reported damage caused by a Kalbaishakhi storm that hit Bhubaneswar on Monday, damaging around 20 sweet stalls at Pahala and disrupting traffic on National Highway-16 after an uprooted tree blocked the road. A parked vehicle was also damaged in the incident. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and follow weather advisories.
