Bhubaneswar, June 2: In a significant achievement for wildlife conservation in Odisha, tigress Zeenat has given birth to four healthy cubs in the Similipal Tiger Reserve, bringing cheer to conservationists, forest officials, and wildlife enthusiasts across the state. The development is being hailed as a major success for ongoing efforts to strengthen the tiger population in one of India’s most important tiger habitats.
According to forest department sources, Zeenat delivered the four cubs on May 28. The birth marks a crucial milestone in the reserve’s tiger conservation programme and is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the tiger population in Similipal.
Following the birth, forest officials have intensified monitoring of the tigress and her cubs to ensure their safety and well-being. Special protection measures have been put in place in the area where the tigress is currently sheltering with her litter. Surveillance teams are keeping a close watch on the family to prevent disturbances and safeguard them from potential threats.
Zeenat was translocated to Similipal from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in November 2024 as part of a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing genetic diversity and strengthening the reserve’s tiger population. Since her arrival, the Forest Department has continuously tracked her movements, behaviour, and health through scientific monitoring systems.
Wildlife experts believe the successful birth of four cubs validates the translocation programme and demonstrates the suitability of Similipal’s habitat for tiger conservation. The development has infused fresh optimism into conservation circles and is expected to further bolster efforts to protect and expand the big cat population in the reserve.
Officials described the event as a landmark moment for Odisha’s wildlife conservation journey and a promising sign for the future of tiger preservation in Similipal.
