Bhubaneswar, Mar 19: The Odisha Legislative Assembly remained paralysed on Friday as Opposition members intensified their protest, demanding the resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling over the devastating fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital that claimed 13 lives.
The Opposition, led by the Biju Janata Dal and the Indian National Congress, staged protests inside the House, alleging gross negligence in maintaining safety standards at the state’s premier healthcare institution. Legislators raised slogans and disrupted proceedings, refusing to allow normal functioning of the Assembly.
The tragic fire incident has triggered a major political storm in Odisha, with the Opposition taking a firm stand. Members have made it clear that the House will remain stalled until the Health Minister steps down, holding him morally responsible for the incident.
Leader of Opposition Pramila Mallik strongly criticised the government, accusing it of inaction and lack of accountability. She stated that the Health Minister has failed in his duty and must resign on ethical grounds.
Amid the continuous uproar, Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the House multiple times—first till 11:30 am, then 1 pm, and later 4 pm—in an effort to restore order. Despite repeated adjournments, the deadlock continued, reflecting deep political tensions in the state.
