Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: The Odisha government has invited proposals for the creation of new districts during the 2026–27 financial year, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari informed the State Legislative Assembly in a written reply on Thursday.
Responding to a query in the House, the Minister said the government is open to examining fresh proposals if formally submitted by stakeholders or public representatives. He clarified that any proposal received will undergo detailed scrutiny in line with established administrative norms, geographical feasibility, population size, and governance requirements before a final decision is taken.
Pujari noted that demands for district reorganisation have been emerging from several regions, primarily to improve administrative accessibility and accelerate grassroots development. As per the written reply, the state government has already received memoranda seeking the formation of 31 new districts.
These demands have been formally submitted to the authorities and are presently under consideration at various administrative levels. Detailed evaluations will assess infrastructure availability, revenue viability, and service delivery capacity.
The move signals the government’s willingness to review administrative restructuring to strengthen governance, enhance public service outreach, and support balanced regional development across Odisha.
