Bhubaneswar, Feb 24: A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked system, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a yellow warning for rainfall and thunderstorms in 15 districts of Odisha. The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast thunderstorm activity for the next two days as the system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move west-northwestwards.
Districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Ganjam and Gajapati are expected to experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder. Several coastal and western Odisha districts may also witness similar weather conditions today.
Koraput town has been receiving light rain with thunder since Sunday evening, with steady showers reported from Jeypore, Pattangi, Semiliguda and Nandapur. In Subarnapur district, a Kalbaisakhi storm uprooted trees and blew away asbestos roofing sheets in several areas.
Meanwhile, sudden heavy rain and hailstorms have lashed parts of Bargarh district, severely damaging paddy, vegetable and rabi crops. Farmers are facing losses due to the unseasonal rainfall, while authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation closely.
