Bhubaneswar, Feb 4: Two teachers of Belpada Primary School under Gania block in Nayagarh district have been suspended following the tragic death of a Class V student, whose body was recovered from an open well in Belpada village on Wednesday. The incident has triggered strong reactions from locals and raised serious questions over student safety and supervision in schools.
Confirming the action, Gania Block Education Officer (BEO) Lipsa Nanda said the school headmistress and a female teacher, who were present on duty on Tuesday, were placed under suspension for alleged negligence. She said that soon after receiving information about the incident, the Block Resource Centre Coordinator (BRCC) conducted a field visit. On Wednesday, the District Education Officer, BRCC, CRCC and the BEO jointly visited the site to assess the situation.
The deceased student has been identified as Bijay Mallick. According to reports, Bijay left the school premises around 1 pm on Tuesday after consuming the mid-day meal, reportedly to relieve himself, but failed to return home. After an overnight search and a missing complaint at Gania Police Station, his body was found in an open well near the village on Wednesday morning.
Following the recovery, villagers staged a protest by blocking the Kantilo–Daspalla road, alleging foul play. Police officials, including the Gania IIC and Khandapada SDPO, reached the spot and initiated an inquiry into the incident.
