Bhubaneswar, May 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across Odisha from May 7 to May 13, issuing yellow warnings for multiple districts.
For May 7, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph in districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nabarangapur. Additionally, districts such as Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir are likely to experience similar conditions with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.
The weather agency has extended yellow warnings for May 8, covering several coastal and interior districts, with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph expected at isolated places. Similar conditions are likely to continue on May 9 in Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar.
According to forecasts, the thunderstorm activity will persist through May 10 and May 11, impacting both northern and southern regions, including Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Puri.
The IMD has advised residents to remain alert, avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, and take precautions against lightning strikes and strong winds.
