Bhubaneswar, Feb 23: The sixth day of the Budget Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly descended into chaos on Tuesday as opposition members disrupted proceedings during the crucial Question Hour, leading to repeated adjournments of the House.
The Assembly had resumed after a day’s break, but normal functioning was short-lived as members of the Biju Janata Dal and the Indian National Congress staged protests on different issues. BJD legislators raised concerns related to farmers’ problems, seeking government clarification on agricultural distress and support measures. Meanwhile, Congress members created a ruckus over the alleged Epstein file scandal, demanding a discussion on the matter.
Despite repeated appeals from Speaker Surama Padhy to maintain decorum and allow the Question Hour to proceed, protesting members continued sloganeering in the Well of the House. With order proving impossible to restore, the Speaker first adjourned the House at 11:30 am. When proceedings resumed, disruptions persisted, forcing another adjournment for 30 minutes.
Amid the ongoing stalemate, Speaker Padhy convened an all-party meeting in an effort to break the deadlock and ensure the smooth conduct of the remaining Budget Session proceedings.
