Bhubaneswar, Feb 21: In a major policy shift aimed at reducing environmental hazards, the Odisha government has decided to introduce tetra pack packaging for liquor sales, gradually moving away from conventional glass bottles. Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan informed the Odisha Legislative Assembly about the change during a recent session.
The announcement came in response to a question raised by Champua MLA Sanatan Mahakud, who sought clarification regarding packaging norms under the state’s revised excise policy. Addressing the House, the Minister stated that the updated policy now permits the sale of liquor in tetra packs, similar to packaging commonly used for fruit juices and dairy products.
Harichandan explained that tetra packs are considered a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative. Unlike glass bottles, which often pose disposal challenges and safety risks when broken, tetra packs are lighter, less prone to damage, and easier to manage in waste systems. The move is expected to reduce littering, lower the risk of injuries from shattered glass, and support the government’s broader sustainability goals.
The Minister also encouraged institutions and consumers to promote reuse and recycling practices, especially for existing glass bottles, to further strengthen environmental responsibility across the state.
