Bhubaneswar, Feb 4: In a major boost to experiential and nature-based tourism, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Wednesday flagged off three tourism caravans at Dhauli, marking Odisha’s formal entry into caravan tourism. The initiative aims to offer visitors a unique, flexible and immersive way to explore the state’s diverse destinations with greater privacy, comfort and freedom of movement.
Speaking on the occasion, Parida said the caravans would allow tourists to experience Odisha’s serene natural landscapes at their own pace, supported by modern amenities that balance convenience with sustainability. Noting that caravan tourism is popular in several European countries, she said Odisha’s initiative is designed to attract young travellers, adventure enthusiasts and offbeat explorers seeking meaningful travel experiences.
Bhubaneswar-Ekamra MLA Babu Singh said the initiative would help tourists explore new destinations with enhanced comfort and safety, and praised the government’s efforts to diversify tourism offerings. Director of Tourism Deepankar Mohapatra, in his welcome address, said caravan tourism would help disperse tourist footfall beyond traditional hubs, promoting balanced regional development.
The project has been launched by the Department of Tourism under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) model and is operated by Sand and Pebble Tours. Destinations identified include Hirakud, Similipal, Daringbadi, Deomali, Talsari, Pentha, Mangalajodi and Jiranga. The inaugural trip was flagged off to Talsari in Balasore, with Annada Prasad Padhy and Archana Padhy receiving the first tickets.
