Bhubaneswar, Mar 24: The Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed intense disruptions on Tuesday as opposition BJD and Congress MLAs staged protests demanding the resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling following a deadly fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital that claimed 13 lives.
As the House convened, opposition members raised slogans, accusing the government of negligence and failure to ensure safety at the hospital. The uproar forced the Speaker to adjourn proceedings till 4 pm. Several legislators also staged a walkout, further intensifying the standoff.
When the Assembly reconvened later in the day, the protests resumed with greater intensity. Some MLAs attempted to climb onto the Speaker’s podium, leading to chaotic scenes inside the House. Amid the turmoil, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo appealed for calm and urged members to return to constructive debate.
He emphasized that the ongoing session was crucial for public interest and should not be disrupted. Despite repeated appeals, no legislative business could be conducted, and the Assembly was adjourned for the day, reflecting a complete breakdown of proceedings.
