Bhubaneswar, Mar 10: A shocking incident of gun violence has been reported from Kandhamal district where a man allegedly went on a shooting spree, killing his wife and seriously injuring another person. Police have detained the accused and launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the brutal act.
The accused has been identified as Biranchi Behera, a resident of Sarupada village under Krandibali panchayat. According to preliminary reports, Biranchi allegedly opened fire on Narottam Behera of Katapanga village while he was travelling to Phiringia with his wife to get an Aadhaar card made.
The incident reportedly took place near the Bagharimunda kendu leaf collection point under Gochhapada Police Station. Biranchi is said to have intercepted the couple and fired at Narottam, with bullets hitting his leg and other parts of his body, leaving him critically injured.
After the attack, the accused allegedly returned home and shot his wife, Lilima Behera, who died on the spot. The reason behind the killing is yet to be known.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving information and shifted the injured Narottam to Gochhapada Community Health Centre before referring him to Phulbani District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police seized the firearm used in the crime and are interrogating the accused. Gochhapada IIC Sanjit Behera confirmed that an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances behind the incident.
