Bhubaneswar, Feb 2: Jagatsinghpur, Odisha’s most literate district and the birthplace of Adikabi Sarala Das, celebrated the first anniversary of Jagatsinghpur Heritage Walks (JHW) by honouring individuals regarded as “living heritages” for their contributions to culture, tradition and society. The felicitation ceremony recognised people from diverse walks of life who have played a vital role in preserving and popularising the district’s rich heritage.
Among the most celebrated was 76-year-old Sagarbala Patnaik, fondly known as “Basanti Apa”, a former actress of the famed Annapurna Theatre Group, who also acted in Odia films like Sesha Sravan, Mana Akash and Samay Bada Balaban. Despite personal hardships, she continues to inspire by running a tea stall to support her family.
The team led by Mihir Nana was honoured for preserving the sacred “Ghanta Patua” dance tradition of Maa Sarala, while Shyam Chacha, a Muslim devotee of Lord Jagannath, and Odissi dancer Seikh Sahil Mohammad were also felicitated for promoting communal harmony and classical arts.
Others honoured included folk artists, temple priests safeguarding ancient shrines and sculptures, families preserving discovered idols by building temples, traditional handloom weavers of Badabag village, and snake rescuer Kundan Kumar Paswan. The event highlighted Jagatsinghpur’s enduring cultural spirit and community-driven heritage conservation.
