New Delhi, Jan 15: Major Indian carriers Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet on Thursday announced the rerouting and cancellation of several international flights following Iran’s sudden closure of its airspace. The move comes amid widespread protests in Iran against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and escalating tensions with the United States.
Due to the airspace shutdown, Air India was forced to cancel multiple early morning flights, including Delhi–New York (AI 101), Delhi–Newark (AI 105) and Mumbai–New York (AI 119). The return services on these routes were also called off. In a post on X, Air India said its flights overflying the region are now using alternate routes, which may lead to delays. The airline added that services are being cancelled where rerouting is not feasible.
IndiGo’s Baku–Delhi flight had to return to Azerbaijan within an hour of take-off as it was scheduled to pass through Iranian airspace. IndiGo said it is working to support affected passengers with alternative options.
SpiceJet also confirmed disruptions due to the closure. All airlines stressed that passenger and crew safety remains their top priority. International carriers like Lufthansa have also reported cancellations.
