Bhubaneswar, Jan 16: Eminent academician and former Principal of the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), Prof. Bira Kishore Sarap, passed away in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. He was 89 and had been ailing for some time. Prof. Sarap is survived by a son and two daughters. His wife had predeceased him.
Prof. Sarap played a pivotal role in providing leadership to Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) Deemed to be University during its formative years, helping shape its academic vision and institutional growth. A distinguished scholar, he earlier served as Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, where he made significant contributions to research and teaching. He was also associated with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and contributed to the design of components for the Agni missile project.
Before joining ITER, he served as Principal of the University College of Engineering at Burla, now known as Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology.
Expressing deep grief, SOA Founder President Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak described Prof. Sarap as a visionary leader and dedicated educationist whose integrity and wisdom inspired generations. The SOA fraternity paid tribute to his lasting contributions to higher education.
