Bhubaneswar, Feb 20: Five young men have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting at Press Colony in Cuttack, and the firearm used in the crime has been seized, Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said at a press conference on Friday.Police said the incident stemmed from a late-night drinking session that turned violent. Six persons had gathered inside a house in the locality when casual banter allegedly escalated into heated arguments over domestic and family matters. During the altercation, Utkal Keshari Pasayat alias Huku reportedly grabbed a firearm brought by Nandu alias Abhijit Mohanty.
Investigators said Pasayat stepped outside with the weapon, where Soumya alias Rinku allegedly taunted him. In a sudden escalation, Pasayat allegedly fired at Soumya, critically injuring him. Shockingly, those present reportedly deliberated on their next steps instead of immediately taking the victim to hospital. Police stated Soumya was still alive during this delay.
The probe also revealed attempts to conceal evidence and shift blame. The firearm was allegedly hidden inside the house. The arrested accused include Pasayat, Mohanty, Priyabrat Tripathy, Himanshu Shekhar Nayak and Rudraprasad Chand, several of whom have prior criminal records.
