Bhubaneswar, Mar 2: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will not only become more capable but may eventually surpass human intelligence, Prof. (Dr.) Jonnie Penn, Professor of AI Ethics and Society at the University of Cambridge, said on Monday.
Speaking at an International AI Conclave organised at SOA Deemed to be University, Prof. Penn remarked, “Machines will not only be able to learn, but they will learn how to learn,” highlighting the rapid evolution of AI technologies. Delivering the keynote address on the theme ‘India’s AI Future—Role of Academia, Industry, Research and Innovation’, he noted that AI was barely discussed 15 years ago but now dominates global conversations.
Prof. Penn described AI as part of an emerging “intention economy,” capable of maximizing the likelihood of achieving specific goals. He also touched upon its socio-technical implications and potential links to climate change mitigation efforts.
The conclave was presided over by SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda and attended by diplomats including Guyana’s Ambassador Dharmakumar Seeraj. Speakers emphasized that while AI will reshape economies and daily life, those trained in AI will remain competitive. Prof. Nanda added that AI would augment professions, though individuals skilled in AI may outpace those without such expertise.
