Bhubaneswar, June 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Warning for several districts of Odisha on June 17, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds over the next few days. The weather agency has advised residents to remain cautious as adverse weather conditions are expected to affect large parts of the state.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph are very likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh districts on June 17. These districts have been placed under Orange Warning due to the possibility of intense weather activity.
The remaining districts have been issued Yellow Warnings for thunderstorms and hot and humid conditions. Heat wave conditions are also likely at isolated places in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts.
For June 18 and 19, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph across most districts of Odisha. Some western districts, including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur, may experience comparatively lower wind speeds of 30-40 kmph. Hot and humid conditions are expected to persist, particularly in coastal and southern Odisha.
The weather department has also issued Yellow Warnings for June 20 and 21, predicting thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across nearly all districts of the state. Coastal districts are likely to continue experiencing uncomfortable hot and humid weather.
Authorities have advised people to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms, stay indoors whenever possible, and follow official weather advisories to prevent any untoward incidents. The IMD continues to closely monitor the evolving weather situation across Odisha.
