Bhubaneswar, May 27: In a major crackdown on organised crime and drug trafficking, the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of Bhubaneswar Police on Wednesday injured a notorious criminal and alleged drug peddler, identified as Pupun Majhi, during an encounter in the Info Valley area on the outskirts of the city.
According to police sources, the encounter took place during a raid conducted by the SCU based on specific intelligence inputs regarding Majhi’s movement and alleged involvement in illegal drug activities in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
Police said the accused attempted to flee after being intercepted by the Special Crime Unit team. During the operation, Majhi allegedly opened fire at the police personnel in an attempt to escape. In retaliation, the police team fired back, injuring him in the exchange of fire.
After being overpowered, Majhi was immediately shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, doctors later referred him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical care.
During the operation, police recovered 25 grams of brown sugar, one pistol, five live rounds of ammunition, and a motorcycle from his possession.
Police officials said Majhi, a resident of Buguda in Ganjam district, is a history-sheeter with more than 20 criminal cases registered against him in his home district. Several criminal cases have also reportedly been registered against him in Bhubaneswar.
The Special Crime Unit had been tracking his activities for a considerable period due to his alleged involvement in drug trafficking and other serious offences. Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
