Bhubaneswar, May 12: Two accused persons sustained bullet injuries during a police encounter near the Karlakhaman area under Belpahar police station limits in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district early Monday morning. The encounter reportedly took place after the accused allegedly opened fire on a police team that had launched an operation to apprehend them in connection with an assault case reported on Sunday.
According to reports, the accused had been absconding since the assault incident. Acting on specific intelligence regarding their whereabouts, a police team conducted a raid in the area during the early hours of Monday.
When the police approached the suspects, the accused allegedly attempted to escape and opened fire at the police team, reportedly firing four rounds. In response, the police retaliated in self-defence, leading to a brief exchange of fire between both sides.
Belpahar Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) said both accused sustained bullet injuries to their legs during the encounter. The injured persons were immediately rescued and shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Their condition is said to be stable.
No police personnel were injured during the operation. Following the incident, security was tightened in the area and police launched further searches to gather more evidence related to the case.
Police officials said an investigation is underway to determine the complete sequence of events and examine the accused persons’ involvement in other criminal activities. Further details are awaited.
