Bhubaneswar, April 24: In response to the severe heatwave conditions gripping the state, the Odisha government has announced the closure of all government, government-aided, and private schools from April 27. The decision comes as temperatures continue to soar across multiple districts, raising serious concerns over student safety.
The move was approved by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi following a proposal submitted by the School and Mass Education Department. Officials stated that the step has been taken as a precautionary measure to shield school children from extreme heat and related health risks.
Despite the suspension of regular classroom activities, authorities have clarified that pre-scheduled examinations will be conducted as planned. Additionally, census-related duties and other essential administrative functions in schools will continue without disruption.
The government has emphasised that ensuring the well-being of students remains a top priority, especially during the ongoing spell of extreme weather. District administrations have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and ensure proper implementation of the order.
Parents and educators have largely welcomed the decision, noting that it will help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses among children. The government is expected to review the situation periodically before deciding on reopening schools.
