Bhubaneswar, April 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported severe heatwave conditions across Odisha, with Jharsuguda emerging as the hottest location in the state on Thursday.
According to data released by the Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar at 2:30 PM, Jharsuguda recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4°C, accompanied by a very low relative humidity of 14 per cent, intensifying the scorching conditions. Close behind, Hirakud registered 43.0°C with 29 per cent humidity, while Sambalpur recorded 42.6°C and Rourkela touched 42.0°C.
The state capital, Bhubaneswar, also experienced intense heat, with the mercury rising to 41.8°C and humidity at 33 per cent.
A clear contrast was observed between interior and coastal regions. While western Odisha reeled under dry and extreme heat, coastal areas experienced comparatively lower temperatures due to moisture from the Bay of Bengal. Paradip recorded 31.6°C with 76 per cent humidity, while Gopalpur, Puri, and Balasore reported temperatures between 32°C and 33°C, creating humid conditions.
The IMD has advised residents, especially in interior districts, to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
