Bhubaneswar, April 22: The India Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecast no immediate relief from the ongoing heatwave in Odisha, with extreme weather conditions likely to continue till April 25. Temperatures across the state remain alarmingly high, with more than half of Odisha recording over 40°C.
On Wednesday, the mercury in Bhubaneswar touched 41°C, while the department warned that temperatures could rise further, reaching up to 45°C in districts such as Titilagarh, Balangir, and Jharsuguda. Heatwave alerts have been issued for several parts of the state, urging residents to take precautions.
In response, district administrations have announced extended school closures to protect students from the extreme heat. In Sundargarh, all schools will remain closed till April 27. Authorities in Sambalpur have extended holidays till April 24, while schools in Gajapati will remain shut from April 22 to April 24.
Officials clarified that the closures apply to all institutions from nursery to Class XII. However, examinations will be conducted as per the pre-scheduled timetable without any changes.
With the heatwave intensifying, authorities have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions as the state braces for several more days of scorching temperatures.
