Bhubaneswar, Jan 15: Pahala police on Thursday arrested a man for allegedly cheating a woman of ₹22 lakh by creating a fake profile on a matrimonial website and luring her with false promises of marriage. According to police sources, the accused approached the victim through the online platform and gained her trust by pretending to be genuinely interested in marrying her. To strengthen his claims, he even introduced his younger brother as a reference to make his story appear credible.
Investigators said the accused gradually convinced the woman to transfer large sums of money, claiming the amount was needed for marriage arrangements and investments in bank policies. Believing his assurances, the victim transferred nearly ₹22 lakh to him over a period of time.
However, the woman later became suspicious and realized she had been deceived. She subsequently lodged a complaint with the Pahala police. Acting swiftly on the complaint, the police arrested the accused and produced him before the court.
During the investigation, police found that the accused had allegedly cheated several other women in a similar manner, posing as a doctor and maintaining multiple fake relationships. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of his fraudulent activities.
