Southwest Monsoon covers all of Odisha, heavy rains expected
Bhubaneswar, June 17: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Tuesday that the Southwest Monsoon has now fully advanced, encompassing the entire state of Odisha. This significant meteorological development marks a crucial shift in weather patterns across the region, promising increased rainfall activity.
While the monsoon initially arrived over parts of Odisha on May 28, a notable 13 days earlier than its typical June 10 schedule, its progress had slowed considerably thereafter. For several days, the monsoon's intensity and geographical reach remained limited, leading to subdued rainfall across many areas.
However, with this recent advancement, the monsoon has regained its momentum, setting the stage for heavy rainfall in Odisha over the coming days. The IMD's Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar confirms that favorable atmospheric conditions will now bring much-needed precipitation to all corners of the state.
Despite the recent full coverage, the cumulative monsoon rainfall between June 1 and June 17 stands at 73.0 mm, slightly below the normal of 91.4 mm. Current data shows varied distribution: one district has recorded 'Large Excess' rainfall, five are in 'Excess,' twelve are 'Normal,' eleven are 'Deficient,' and one district remains in the 'Large Deficient' category.
This full monsoon coverage, coupled with a newly formed low-pressure area over Southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, indicates a robust phase for Odisha weather updates and potential flood monitoring. Stay informed on monsoon updates Odisha.
