Soumyashree’s family urges unity, not politics; CM assures justice, announces ₹20 lakh ex-gratia

Bhubaneswar, July 15: Amid a growing political uproar over the tragic death of 20-year-old student Soumyashree Bisi, her grieving family on Tuesday expressed trust in the government and urged all to refrain from politicising the incident.

Soumyashree, a B.Ed. student at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, died late Monday night at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after suffering severe burn injuries in a self-immolation attempt on campus. She had accused her department head of prolonged sexual harassment and alleged inaction by authorities.

Speaking after her last rites were performed at their native village in Balasore, her father Balaram Bisi said, “The Chief Minister sent me a message assuring a proper investigation. I have faith in the system, the administration, and the rule of law. Without that, what do we have left?”

Thanking the government for providing high-quality treatment, he added, “AIIMS Bhubaneswar doctors and staff did their best. I am grateful.” Holding back tears, he urged, “Please don’t politicise my daughter’s death. I will fight for her justice till my last breath.”

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced ₹20 lakh ex-gratia and ordered a thorough probe. Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj pledged strict action and future safeguards.
