Mystery surrounds the death of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya student

Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: A tragic incident occurred on Monday at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, where a second-year student, Utkalika Swain, took her own life by hanging in her hostel room. The student, originally from Kendrapara, reportedly used her stole to hang herself from the ceiling fan in her room, which was locked while her two roommates were away on holiday.

Concerns arose among her friends when they found her room unresponsive for several hours. “When we arrived at college, her door was locked from the inside. We attempted to reach her by phone, but she did not answer. After knocking, we informed the hostel matron, who opened the door and discovered her hanging,” one friend recounted.

The motives behind Swain’s decision remain uncertain. The police have taken the body for a post-mortem examination and are investigating the case, having notified her family of the tragic event.

The principal of the college described Swain as a dedicated student involved in the Odissi dance program. “Though she had been unwell and unable to dance recently, she appeared fine when she participated in an Odissi event last Saturday,” the principal stated.

The officer in charge of the Capital Police Station confirmed they dispatched a team to the scene upon receiving news of the incident. A scientific team has been called in to assist with the investigation, and Swain’s mobile phone, found on her bed, will be analyzed to examine her call records for further insights.
