Cyclonic circulation to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms across Odisha till May 30
Bhubaneswar, May 24: A cyclonic circulation hovering over north coastal Odisha is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the state over the next 24 hours, warned senior meteorologist Umasankar Das on Saturday. The weather pattern is being closely monitored as a low-pressure system is likely to develop over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Warning for May 24, predicting thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds (40–50 kmph), and heavy rainfall in districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Kandhamal.
A Yellow Warning has been issued for the same day for thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph in parts of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Nabarangpur, and others.
Similar weather is forecast to persist through May 25–27, with varying degrees of rainfall, lightning, and wind speeds across different regions. On May 27, heavy rains with 40–50 kmph gusts are expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jajpur, Koraput, and other coastal and interior districts. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
