Bhubaneswar, May 11: A low-pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Sri Lanka coast under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
According to the IMD, the system developed around 5:30 am and is likely to become more marked during the next 48 hours. Despite the development, weather experts have clarified that there is no immediate concern for Odisha as the system is currently located far away from the state’s coastline.
Meteorologists said the low-pressure area is not expected to have any major impact on Odisha’s weather conditions at present, and no warning or alert has been issued for the state so far.
The latest meteorological analysis released by the IMD also mentioned multiple upper air cyclonic circulations influencing weather patterns across the country. One such circulation over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining areas now lies over West Madhya Pradesh and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. Another circulation has been observed over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep region off the Kerala coast. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan and Punjab now lies over West Rajasthan.
Officials said these systems are being continuously monitored for any possible changes in intensity or movement. The IMD has assured that further updates and advisories will be issued depending on the future course of the low-pressure system.
Weather experts have advised people not to panic, reiterating that Odisha is unlikely to witness any significant effect from the system in the immediate future.
