Bhubaneswar, April 30: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday underlined the importance of holistic women empowerment, particularly in the political domain, while addressing a special one-day session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly on the theme ‘Women’s Contribution in Indian Democracy’.
Thanking the Speaker for initiating the discussion, the Chief Minister expressed hope that members across party lines would offer constructive and meaningful suggestions to strengthen women’s participation in governance. He noted that despite 75 years of constitutional democracy, a large section of women still feels deprived, highlighting the need for a broader and more inclusive approach to empowerment.
Criticising the narrow interpretation of women empowerment, Majhi said it is often limited to financial assistance through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). “Many believe that forming SHGs and providing funds is enough. This is a flawed understanding. True empowerment lies in enabling women to take independent decisions for themselves, their families, and society,” he asserted. He stressed that real empowerment must encompass social, economic, and political dimensions.
Highlighting the achievements of women in modern India, the Chief Minister said they have excelled in diverse fields, breaking traditional barriers. “From managing households to driving public transport and flying fighter aircraft, women are proving their capabilities in every sphere,” he said.
Recalling instances of courage in the armed forces, Majhi cited the role of women personnel during key operations, describing them as symbols of “Nari Shakti.” He said such examples reflect the growing strength and confidence of women in contemporary India and reinforce the need to further expand their role in decision-making processes.
