Bhubaneswar, Oct 16: A team of paediatricians at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar successfully revived a newborn suffering from multiple complications, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, coordinated medical care and timely intervention.
The baby, delivered in Khurda, developed respiratory distress just eight hours after birth and was brought to IMS and SUM Hospital for emergency treatment.
Following admission to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the newborn developed shock and dangerously low blood pressure. The medical team administered multiple medications to stabilise the baby’s condition.
A 2D echocardiography examination revealed poor cardiac contraction and critical aortic stenosis, a serious condition involving narrowing of the aortic valve that restricts blood flow from the heart. Given the severity of the condition, the doctors sought an urgent cardiology opinion.
The team subsequently performed a balloon valvotomy, a minimally invasive procedure used to widen a narrowed heart valve. Following the intervention, the baby’s condition improved significantly. The newborn was taken off ventilator support, transitioned to breathing room air and discharged after two weeks of hospitalisation.
Prof. (Dr.) Debasish Nanda, Professor and Head of the Department of Neonatology, congratulated the medical team for its excellent coordination and commitment to patient care.
The cardiac intervention was performed by Prof. (Dr.) Soumya Ranjan Mahapatra and Dr. Gyanaranjan Nayak, while Prof. (Dr.) Anuspandana Mohapatra conducted the echocardiography.
Several other doctors and specialists from the hospital were involved in the newborn’s clinical management and recovery.
